Pistikutest

Pistikutest is a horticultural method of reproducing plants from vegetative parts, most commonly stems or leaves, rather than from seeds. It is used for a wide range of ornamental plants, houseplants, and many fruit and woody species, because it often produces plants that are genetically identical to the parent and can yield new specimens more quickly than seed propagation.

The basic process involves selecting a healthy donor plant, choosing appropriate cuttings (such as tip, heel, or stem cuttings at various maturities), and preparing them for rooting. Cuttings are typically shortened to remove excess growth, and lower leaves may be removed to reduce water loss. Many practitioners treat cuttings with rooting hormone to stimulate root formation. The cuttings are then placed in a suitable rooting medium, such as a mix of peat, perlite, or sand, and kept in a-controlled environment with high humidity and steady moisture. Temperature and light are important, with many species rooting best in warm conditions and bright but indirect light.

There are several cutting types, including tip cuttings (taken from the growing tip), stem cuttings (from a section of mature stem), and leaf cuttings (where leaves or leaf sections can generate roots). Some species require seasonal timing, with softer, younger wood rooting more readily in spring or early summer, while hardwood cuttings may be taken in dormancy for certain trees and shrubs.

After roots establish, cuttings are gradually acclimatized to normal moisture and light levels and eventually transplanted to a larger pot or garden bed. Pistikutest offers advantages such as genetic fidelity and rapid multiplication, but limitations include variable success across species and potential transmission of pests or diseases.
