Pikelny is a traditional fermented beverage originating from the Carpathian region, particularly associated with Polish and Ukrainian mountain communities. The drink is made primarily from pickled cucumbers and their brine, combined with various herbs and spices to create a mildly alcoholic fermented beverage.

The preparation process involves allowing cucumber brine to ferment naturally over several days or weeks, during which wild yeasts and lactic acid bacteria convert the sugars into alcohol and organic acids. Traditional recipes often include additional ingredients such as garlic, dill, mustard seeds, and horseradish, which contribute to both flavor complexity and preservation.

Pikelny typically contains between 2-8% alcohol by volume, making it a light alcoholic beverage. The fermentation process produces a tangy, slightly salty taste profile with herbal undertones. The drink is traditionally consumed chilled and is often homemade in rural communities rather than commercially produced.

Historically, pikelny served multiple purposes in Carpathian households beyond mere refreshment.
