Peenistamist

Peenistamist is a term found in some technical contexts used to describe the metalworking practice more commonly known as peening. The process involves imparting small, localized plastic deformations to a metal surface through repeated impacts or energy delivery. The goal is to modify surface properties rather than remove material, creating a layer of residual compressive stress that can improve performance under loading.

There are several methods of peenistamist. Traditional hammer peening uses a tool to strike the surface repeatedly. Shot peening bombards the surface with small spherical media to produce uniform coverage. Ultrasonic impact peening uses high-frequency impingement from an ultrasonic horn, while laser peening employs pulsed laser energy to generate shock waves. Process parameters include coverage (the portion of the area receiving impacts), intensity (often quantified as Almen intensity in shot peening), impact energy, media size, and exposure time. Post-treatment cleaning and surface inspection are commonly performed.

Applications of peenistamist span aerospace, automotive, and tooling industries, where fatigue life and surface integrity are critical. Components such as gears, shafts, springs, fasteners, and turbine blades frequently undergo peenistamist to enhance resistance to fatigue cracking, stress corrosion, and surface-initiated failures. It can allow performance improvements without significant material removal or heat treatment.

Key considerations include material compatibility and the risk of over-peening, which can increase surface roughness, cause dimensional changes, or introduce defects. Media embedding and hydrogen embrittlement are potential concerns for certain alloys. Operators and equipment are typically qualified to standards relevant to the industry, with careful control of coverage, intensity, and inspection to ensure consistent results.
