Nuuksio

Nuuksio is a national park in southern Finland, located in Espoo within the Helsinki metropolitan area. It protects a representative portion of the southern boreal forest and the glacially formed landscape of the region, making it a popular destination for outdoor recreation close to Helsinki.

Geography and nature: The park sits on rocky granite ridges with pine and spruce forests, interspersed birch patches, and several mires and lakes. The landscape bears the marks of past glaciations, including kettle holes and other glacial landforms. The area supports a variety of wildlife typical of southern Finland, including numerous bird species, small mammals, and amphibians.

History and management: Nuuksio was designated as a national park in 1956 and is administered by Metsähallitus. It has been expanded over time to protect additional habitats and to provide a protected area for nature-based recreation near the capital region. The Haltia Nature Centre near the park offers exhibitions on Finnish nature and conservation and serves as an educational facility for visitors.

Recreation and access: The park features a dense network of marked trails, ranging from short circular routes to longer hikes around lakes such as Haukkalampi and the Nuuksio ridges. There are designated lean-to shelters and campfire sites, and in winter the area supports cross-country skiing. Nuuksio is accessible by public transport from Helsinki and Espoo, with multiple parking areas at trailheads. Visitors are encouraged to follow local regulations and practice responsible outdoor etiquette.
