Nudists

Nudism, or naturism, refers to a lifestyle and social practice in which nudity is embraced in nonsexual contexts. Nudists typically seek to normalize the naked human body, reduce shame, and foster a sense of freedom, equality, and connection with nature. The terms nudist and naturist are often used interchangeably, but some groups distinguish between them (with naturism sometimes emphasizing health, environmental awareness, and harmony with nature).

Historically, organized nudism emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with movements in Germany’s Freikörperkultur and growing activity in other parts of Europe and North America. National and international organizations coordinate activities, publications, and standards. The International Naturist Federation (INF) and national bodies such as the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) or British Naturism provide guidance and advocacy.

Practices commonly occur in designated nude beaches, clothing-optional resorts, private clubs, or private homes. Etiquette emphasizes consent, non-sexual behavior, privacy, and respect for others’ comfort. Nudity is usually confined to specific spaces or times, with clothing required in many public areas depending on local laws.

Legality and public acceptance vary widely by country and locality. Some jurisdictions protect the right to be nude in approved spaces; others restrict public nudity, with penalties in some cases. Nudist communities often address age-appropriate access and safety, particularly for families.
