Nazaré

Nazaré is a municipality and a popular tourist destination located on the coast of the Portuguese Estremadura, about 100 kilometers north of Lisbon. It is known for its dramatic cliffside setting, traditional fishing culture, and, most famously, for its colossal waves. The town is divided into three distinct areas: the Praia, the Sítio, and the Pederneira.

The Praia, or beach area, is the heart of the town and features a wide sandy beach lined with restaurants, shops, and hotels. It is a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists. Above the Praia, perched on a high promontory, is the Sítio. This historic upper town is accessible by a funicular and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, a significant religious site, is located here. The third area, Pederneira, is a former fishing lagoon.

Nazaré's global fame has been cemented by its extraordinary surf breaks, particularly the Praia do Norte. During winter months, powerful Atlantic storms generate immense waves, some of the largest in the world, attracting professional surfers and spectators alike. This phenomenon is attributed to a unique underwater canyon that amplifies the ocean swell. Beyond surfing, Nazaré offers a glimpse into traditional Portuguese coastal life, with its colorful fishing boats and the iconic traditional dress of the local women. The town also boasts a rich maritime history and a strong sense of community.
