Nazarés

Nazaré is a municipality and city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the Oeste region of Portugal. It is known for its stunning beaches, traditional fishing culture, and as a world-renowned surfing destination. The town is divided into three main areas: Praia, the lower part by the sea, Sítio, a high promontory overlooking the town, and Pedreira, a more industrial area.

Historically, Nazaré was a humble fishing village. The traditional fishing methods and colorful costumes of the local women, who traditionally wore seven skirts, are iconic symbols of its heritage. While fishing remains important, tourism has become the dominant economic activity, particularly due to the town's dramatic coastline and the exceptional waves that form offshore, especially during the winter months.

The Praia do Norte (North Beach) is famous for its colossal waves, attracting professional surfers from around the globe. These waves are generated by an underwater canyon, the Nazaré Canyon, which amplifies the ocean swell. This phenomenon has led to Nazaré being recognized for holding world records for the largest waves ever surfed. The lighthouse at Sítio offers panoramic views and is a popular spot to observe the surfers and the powerful ocean. The town also celebrates religious festivals, most notably the Festas da Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, which honor the town's patron saint.
