Naturrening is a term used in Nordic and European environmental discourse to describe intentional efforts to renew natural systems and restore their ecological functions. It encompasses practices aimed at reviving biodiversity, restoring ecosystem processes, and reestablishing resilient landscapes that provide essential ecosystem services such as clean water, climate regulation, pollination, and soil health. The concept is often linked to restoration ecology, rewilding, and sustainable land management, while emphasizing the renewal of natural processes alongside observable improvements in habitat quality.

Etymology and usage of the term vary by language. In Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish contexts the word combines notions of nature with renewal or renewal-oriented action. There is no single universally accepted definition, and the term is used differently across policies, academic writings, and practitioner guidance. Some usages stress restoration of degraded sites, others highlight proactive conservation and the reintroduction of native processes and species.

Principles commonly associated with naturrening include prioritizing long-term ecological integrity, maintaining or increasing ecosystem services, and involving local communities in planning and stewardship. The approach favors adaptive management, where actions are monitored and adjusted in response to ecological feedback, social needs, and changing climatic conditions.
