NaturallySpeaking

NaturallySpeaking, commonly referred to as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, is a speech recognition software originally developed by Dragon Systems and later owned by Nuance Communications. It enables users to dictate text and operate computer applications using spoken commands, with relatively high accuracy for large-vocabulary, continuous speech.

Originally released in the late 1990s, Dragon NaturallySpeaking established a benchmark for consumer-grade speech recognition. It evolved through multiple versions, offering improvements in recognition accuracy, speed, and the ability to create custom commands and vocabulary. The software runs on Windows and, at various times, had a Mac counterpart through separate products. It requires a microphone and a user training phase to tailor recognition to an individual’s voice. Editions typically provide dictation, punctuation, voice editing, and the ability to control software by voice, such as opening programs or navigating documents. Add-ons include specialized vocabularies and macros for repetitive tasks.

In 2000, Nuance Communications acquired Dragon Systems, continuing development of the NaturallySpeaking line under Dragon branding, with editions such as Dragon Professional and Dragon Home. In 2022, Nuance was acquired by Microsoft, and Dragon technology became part of Microsoft’s AI portfolio, with continued deployment in professional settings, healthcare applications, and accessibility tools.

The product has faced competition from cloud-based speech services and evolving privacy considerations but remains cited for accuracy and productivity benefits when used with a high-quality microphone and proper training. It has historically been used in professional, legal, medical, and accessibility contexts to streamline transcription and hands-free computer operation.
