Muumioitujen

Muumioitujen is a Finnish term referring to mummies—the preserved bodies of people or animals after death, achieved through natural desiccation or artificial embalming. The adjective muumioitunut and its plural genitive form muumioitujen are used in Finnish texts to describe, for example, remains belonging to mummies or the group of mummified individuals.

Preservation methods and contexts

Mummification has occurred in many cultures. The most famous examples come from ancient Egypt, where a deliberate process included removing internal organs, drying the body with natron, and wrapping it in linen with resins and amulets. Other cultures practiced artificial or natural mummification, such as the Chinchorro in South America, the Inca and various Asian and European communities, as well as peat bogs or frozen environments that naturally preserved corpses. Natural mummification also occurs in dry deserts, cold mountains, and acidic bogs, where environmental conditions slow decomposition.

Archaeological and scientific significance

Muumioitujen remains provide information about ancient diets, health, social status, burial practices, and environments.
