Muottivalmistus, often referred to as mold making, is a crucial industrial process that involves creating a mold or die for mass production. This mold serves as a template to replicate a desired shape or design in various materials, most commonly plastics, but also metals, composites, and even ceramics. The process begins with the design of the product, typically using computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Once the design is finalized, a mold is manufactured to match these specifications. This is often achieved through subtractive manufacturing methods like CNC machining, where material is removed from a solid block of metal (usually steel or aluminum) to create the cavities and core of the mold. Alternatively, additive manufacturing (3D printing) can be used for certain mold types or prototypes.

The complexity of the mold depends heavily on the product's geometry, required precision, and the intended production volume. Molds can range from simple, single-cavity designs to intricate multi-cavity tools capable of producing numerous parts simultaneously. The manufacturing process demands high accuracy and attention to detail to ensure the final product meets the exact dimensions and surface finish requirements.

After manufacturing, the mold is installed in a production machine, such as an injection molding machine. The chosen material is then introduced into the mold under specific conditions of heat and pressure, taking the shape of the mold's cavity. Once the material solidifies, the mold opens, releasing the finished product. This method allows for rapid and cost-effective production of identical items, forming the backbone of manufacturing for many industries, including automotive, electronics, and consumer goods.
