The role appears in haute couture houses as well as in ready-to-wear productions, where the modéliste may work on one-off samples and on patterns sized for production.

Core responsibilities include interpreting design sketches, draping fabric on a dress form to explore shaping, drafting pattern pieces by hand or with computer-aided design (CAD), and preparing patterns for multiple sizes through grading. The modéliste also compiles technical sheets detailing fabric types, required notions, seam allowances, measurements, and construction notes. Collaboration with designers, seamstresses or sewing technicians, and cutters is essential to refine fit through fittings and revisions.

Skills and tools commonly associated with the role include a strong knowledge of fabrics and garment construction, precision measurement, pattern drafting (manual and CAD-based), and experience with grading and production planning. Proficiency with pattern-making software (such as Gerber or Lectra) and traditional tools (pattern paper, rulers, French curves) is typical. Education is usually through fashion schools or specialized pattern-making programs, with apprenticeships or on-the-job training also common. Career paths include modéliste couture (high fashion) and modéliste industriel (industrial/ready-to-wear), or related pattern-designer roles in costume design.
