Metalldninger refer to the systematic extraction and processing of metallic ore deposits from the earth. The term is primarily used in Norwegian geology and mining literature, where it describes both the physical excavation of ore bodies and the subsequent stages of concentration and refinement that transform raw ore into usable metal products. Unlike generic mining operations, metalldninger is often associated with hard‑rock deposits—such as copper, nickel, zinc, lead, and precious metals—where the ore is embedded within solid strata rather than occurring in alluvial or placer environments.

The process of metalldninger generally proceeds through a sequence of exploration, drilling, feasibility studies, environmental assessment, and finally, the construction of a mining plant. Drilling and sampling establish the size, grade, and geometry of an ore body. When viable, the mine may be named open‑pit or underground, depending on depth and host rock conditions. Extraction employs directional drilling, cutting, crushing, and sometimes in‑situ leaching. The ore is then subjected to crushing, grinding, flotation, or magnetic separation to concentrate the target metal. Subsequent smelting or electrolysis yields the final metallic product.
