Meshback

Meshback refers to the back portion of a chair, typically an office or task chair, made from a woven or knitted mesh material rather than solid upholstery. The mesh back is designed to be breathable, allowing air to circulate and reducing heat buildup during extended use. It is usually supported by a flexible frame that holds the mesh in tension, and may include built-in lumbar support.

Materials commonly used include polyester or nylon blends for the mesh fabric and a supporting frame made of metal or hard plastic. Some designs use polyurethane or vinyl-coated meshes for durability. Mesh backs can be single-layer or multi-layer, and the density of the weave affects support and ventilation. Higher-end models may offer adjustable lumbar support, tilt tension, and height adjustments linked to the mesh back.

Advantages of meshbacks include improved ventilation, lighter weight, and easier cleaning compared with upholstered backs. They can contribute to a cooler seating experience and are often less prone to staining. Disadvantages include a tendency to feel less padded and potentially less comfortable for users who prefer soft cushioning; over time, mesh can sag or lose tension, reducing support.

Care involves regular dusting and occasional cleaning with mild soap and water; avoid harsh solvents that can weaken the mesh or frame. Meshbacks are widely used in office chairs, task chairs, ergonomic chairs, and some gaming chairs.
