MEMSlinssiin

MEMSlinssiin is a term used to describe a family of micro-electro-mechanical system based tunable lens devices that integrate adjustable optics with silicon-based electronics to provide variable focal length in compact imaging systems. Although not a standard term in the literature, it denotes devices that aim to deliver electronically controllable focusing without the need for moving bulky camera assemblies.

Principles and technology often involve a deformable micro-lens membrane or a movable lens element whose curvature or position is altered by MEMS actuators. Actuation methods include electrostatic, piezoelectric, or electrohydrodynamic mechanisms. In a typical configuration, a flexible lens surface sits over a microfabricated cavity or is connected to a micro-lever mechanism; applying voltage changes the lens shape, thus changing the focal length. Some designs use liquid lenses whose interface is shaped by electric fields, while others employ discrete lens elements actuated by comb-drive or dither mechanisms. The devices are designed to be compatible with CMOS sensors and may be fabricated or stacked on the same substrate as imaging circuitry.

Fabrication and integration rely on established MEMS processing techniques, enabling monolithic or closely integrated assemblies with image sensors. This can yield compact modules suitable for consumer electronics, automotive cameras, medical imaging, and certain industrial or scientific instruments.

Applications and trade-offs are centered on compactness, fast electronic focusing, and potential power savings, balanced against optical quality at large apertures, limited actuator stroke, packaging complexity, and manufacturing costs. Research and some early products exist, with ongoing work aiming to improve optical performance, reliability, and economic viability.
