Lämpöuupumus, or heat exhaustion, is a condition caused by the body’s inability to regulate its temperature effectively under prolonged exposure to high heat or physical exertion. It occurs when the body loses excessive amounts of water and electrolytes through sweating, leading to dehydration and impaired bodily functions. While heat exhaustion is not life-threatening if addressed promptly, it can progress to more severe conditions such as heatstroke if left untreated.

Symptoms of lämpöuupumus typically include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and an elevated heart rate. The skin may feel cool and moist, and the individual may experience excessive thirst. In some cases, body temperature may rise slightly but remains below the dangerous threshold seen in heatstroke. Risk factors include prolonged exposure to hot environments, intense physical activity, inadequate hydration, and certain medical conditions or medications that affect heat tolerance.

Prevention of lämpöuupumus involves staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and electrolytes, avoiding excessive sun exposure during peak heat hours, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and taking regular breaks in shaded or cool areas. Those working outdoors or engaging in strenuous activities in hot conditions should monitor their health closely and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.

Treatment for mild lämpöuupumus includes moving to a cooler environment, resting, and rehydrating with fluids containing electrolytes. Cooling measures such as applying cool, damp cloths to the skin or taking a lukewarm shower can also help. Severe cases may require medical intervention, including intravenous fluids or further cooling techniques. Recovery typically occurs within a few hours to a day with proper care. Long-term measures include adjusting work or exercise routines to avoid extreme heat and improving overall hydration habits.
