Luktutvecklingen

Luktutvecklingen is the Swedish term for the development of smell, used to describe how olfactory perception and function emerge and change in individuals as well as how olfactory systems have evolved across species. In a broad sense it covers ontogenetic development—from prenatal stages through adulthood—and evolutionary changes in olfaction, including receptor diversity, neural processing, and behavior related to odors. The concept is used in biology, psychology, and sensory science to understand why smelling abilities vary and how they adapt to different environments.

Biological basis: Smell begins when odorant molecules bind to receptors in the olfactory epithelium, activating olfactory receptor neurons that relay signals to the olfactory bulb. From there, information reaches higher brain regions such as the piriform cortex, amygdala, and orbitofrontal cortex, enabling detection, discrimination, and hedonic evaluation. In humans, roughly 400 functional olfactory receptor genes exist, and odor perception arises from combinatorial patterns of receptor activation, allowing a vast repertoire of smells to be distinguished.

Development and plasticity: Olfactory function develops prenatally and continues to mature after birth, influenced by exposure to environmental odors. Olfactory receptor neurons regenerate throughout life, contributing to ongoing plasticity but also rendering smell susceptible to aging and disease. Odor learning and memory are closely linked to the limbic system and cognitive processes, shaping preferences and recognition of familiar scents.

Variation and relevance: Across species, differences in receptor repertoires and neural circuitry reflect ecological needs such as food sources, predators, and mating cues. Clinically, olfactory impairments (anosmia, hyposmia) affect safety and quality of life and can serve as indicators in various health conditions.
