Ontogenetic is an adjective relating to ontogeny, the development of an individual organism from fertilization or origin to its mature form. The term is used across biology and related fields to describe any developmental process within an organism's lifetime, including embryonic development, growth, morphological change, and behavioral development. The roots are Greek: ontos meaning being and genesis meaning origin.

Ontogeny contrasts with phylogeny, the history of species evolution. Whereas phylogenetic change occurs across generations, ontogeny describes changes within a single organism's life. Researchers study ontogenetic patterns to understand development, variation, and the timing of events such as organ formation, metamorphosis, and response to environmental stress.

The concept describes internal processes like tissue differentiation as well as external behaviors that unfold as an organism matures.
