Luftveisirritasjon refers to discomfort or inflammation in the airways, which include the nose, throat, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. This condition can manifest with a variety of symptoms, such as coughing, sneezing, a sore throat, runny nose, or shortness of breath. The severity and specific symptoms depend on the cause and the extent of the irritation.

Common causes of luftveisirritasjon include environmental factors like air pollution, smoke (tobacco or wildfire), dust, and strong chemical fumes. Allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, and mold, are also frequent triggers, leading to allergic rhinitis or asthma-like symptoms. Infections, particularly viral respiratory infections like the common cold or flu, are a very common cause, often accompanied by fever and body aches. Bacterial infections can also lead to airway irritation.

Other contributing factors can include dry air, particularly in heated indoor environments during winter, or excessive use of the voice, leading to throat irritation. Sometimes, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause stomach acid to irritate the airways, resulting in chronic cough and throat discomfort.

Management of luftveisirritasjon typically involves identifying and avoiding the causative agent. For irritants, improving air quality by using air purifiers or avoiding exposure is key. In cases of allergies, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be recommended. For infections, rest, hydration, and over-the-counter remedies can help manage symptoms, while bacterial infections may require antibiotics. Persistent or severe symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out underlying conditions and receive appropriate treatment.
