Long wheelbase refers to a vehicle that has a longer wheelbase than the standard version of the same or similar model. The wheelbase is the distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels along the vehicle’s longitudinal axis. There is no fixed numerical threshold; a model variant is described as long wheelbase when its wheelbase is noticeably longer and intended to improve certain attributes, particularly interior space.

An extended wheelbase primarily increases interior room, especially rear-seat legroom, and can enhance ride comfort by allowing the suspension to better absorb road irregularities. The longer distance between axles also tends to improve straight-line stability at highway speeds and can help with weight distribution in larger vehicles. In commercial contexts, a longer wheelbase can support larger cabins or cargo areas and can improve ride quality on long highway trips.

However, longer wheelbases generally reduce maneuverability. They increase overall vehicle length, worsen turning radius, and make parking and navigating tight spaces more challenging. Increased length can also influence weight distribution and overhang characteristics in certain body styles, potentially affecting approach and departure angles.

Applications vary across segments. Luxury sedans and limousines commonly offer long-wheelbase variants to maximize rear passenger comfort. SUVs, crossovers, and vans may adopt extended wheelbases to improve cabin or cargo space. In commercial use, long-wheelbase configurations are chosen to enhance highway ride quality and payload potential. Design considerations for LWB vehicles include chassis rigidity, steering geometry, suspension tuning, and safety requirements, often supported by adaptive or air-suspension systems to optimize ride across the longer platform.
