Levyjarrut

Levijarrut, commonly translated as disc brakes, are a braking system used in many road vehicles, motorcycles and increasingly bicycles. The system works by anchoring a rotor to the wheel and squeezing it with brake pads mounted in a caliper. When the brake is applied, hydraulic fluid (in most cars and motorcycles) or a cable transmits force to the caliper pistons, pressing the pads against the rotor and converting kinetic energy into heat.

Rotor designs can be solid or ventilated to improve cooling. Ventilated rotors have a gap between faces to dissipate heat, while drilled or slotted rotors may reduce gas buildup and improve performance in wet conditions, though they can affect rotor strength and pad wear. Calipers may be floating (one or two pistons contacting the pads on opposite sides of the rotor) or fixed (multiple pistons across a single body). In cars and motorcycles, hydraulic actuation is most common, often integrated with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). Some bicycles use mechanical cables, but many modern bicycles employ hydraulic disc brakes similar in principle to motor vehicle systems.

Advantages of levyjarrut include superior heat management, stronger and more consistent stopping power, and better performance in wet conditions. They are generally more expensive and can require more maintenance than drum brakes, with wear on pads and rotors that requires periodic replacement. Levijarrut are standard on most modern automobiles and motorcycles and are increasingly common on high-performance bicycles.
