Leitarvélabætur

Leitarvélabætur, commonly known as mailbox beetles, are small, often overlooked insects belonging to the family Staphylinidae, which is the largest family within the order Coleoptera (beetles). These beetles are characterized by their elongated, slender bodies, typically measuring between 1 and 10 millimeters in length, though some species can be slightly larger. Their name derives from their tendency to be found near mailboxes, where they may seek shelter or prey on small organisms attracted to the moisture and organic matter often present.

Leitarvélabætur are widely distributed across various habitats, including forests, grasslands, and urban areas. They are particularly common in damp environments, such as under logs, leaves, or in soil, where they feed on fungi, decaying plant material, and other small invertebrates. Some species are predatory, hunting mites, springtails, and other tiny arthropods, while others are scavengers, feeding on dead insects or organic debris.

These beetles play an important role in ecosystems by contributing to decomposition processes and controlling pest populations.
