Their work encompasses a wide range of tasks, from planning and planting to constructing hardscape elements and ensuring the long-term health of the vegetation.

The profession typically involves a formal apprenticeship or vocational training program. This training covers essential knowledge in areas such as botany, soil science, plant propagation, pest and disease management, landscape design principles, and the use of specialized tools and machinery. They learn to read and interpret architectural plans and design sketches.

The responsibilities of a Landschaftsgärtner can vary significantly. In the design and creation phase, they might be involved in selecting appropriate plants for specific climates and soil conditions, laying out garden beds, and installing irrigation systems. They also construct features like patios, walkways, retaining walls, ponds, and fences, often working with materials such as stone, wood, and concrete.
