Seasonal tasks such as planting, pruning, and cleanup are common.

Types of gardeners: amateur gardeners who cultivate personal plots; professional gardeners who maintain private estates; landscape gardeners who design and install plantings; municipal or public gardeners who manage parks and streetscapes; and urban or community gardeners who oversee shared plots.

Skills and equipment: knowledge of plant biology, soil science, climate, and horticultural practices; ability to identify pests; physical fitness; patience; and planning. Tools commonly used include trowel, hand pruners, loppers, rake, shovel, hoe, garden fork, hose or watering can, and gloves.

Training and qualifications: many start with on-the-job experience; some pursue formal training in horticulture, landscape design, or arboriculture, earning certificates or degrees. Certifications or licenses vary by country or region. Safety and environmental considerations, such as sustainable and organic methods, are increasingly emphasized.
