Design goals typically aim to improve safety and accessibility, encourage walking and cycling, enhance place-making and local business, support climate resilience, and create legible urban corridors. Planning approaches may involve landscape architecture, urban design, transportation planning, and regulatory tools such as design guidelines or form-based codes. Projects often include street trees, traffic calming, curb extensions, protected bike lanes, transit amenities, and high-quality paving and lighting.

Typologies range from narrow, pedestrian-priority streets and shared streets to wide boulevards and arterials. Historic streetscapes prioritize context and proportion, while modern streetscapes may emphasize flexibility, materials, and adaptability. Rural or suburban streetscapes differ in scale and landscaping.
