Streetscape refers to the visual and functional character of a street and its immediate surroundings. It encompasses the alignment and features of the roadway, sidewalks, landscapes, street furniture, lighting, utilities, signage, and adjacent building facades. The streetscape results from urban design, transportation planning, and landscape architecture, and it varies with context, function, and jurisdiction.

Core elements include sidewalks and curb lines, trees and planting, paving materials, street furniture such as benches and trash receptacles, lighting and wayfinding, transit infrastructure, bike lanes and crossings, and active frontages. Buildings contribute to the enclosure and rhythm of a street; storefronts, canopies, and signage shape its character and identity.

Design aims commonly center on safety and accessibility, pedestrian comfort, and economic vitality. Principles include a human scale, continuity and legibility of routes, permeability for pedestrians, well-defined edges, shade and drainage, and maintenance. Material choices influence durability, climate responsiveness, and aesthetics. Streetscape design may seek compatibility with historic character or accommodate modern uses and technologies, guided by policy and zoning.

Types and contexts vary widely. Historic or heritage streetscapes emphasize continuity with traditional materials and proportions; urban boulevards balance movement with amenities; residential streetscapes prioritize quietness, greenery, and parking needs; waterfront or civic corridors may incorporate promenades, public art, and tactile wayfinding. Sometimes streets are pedestrianized or given protected bike lanes to alter function and experience.

Historically, streetscapes evolved with transportation modes—from pedestrian-centric layouts to car-oriented redesigns in the mid-20th century, to contemporary multi-modal, context-sensitive approaches. Implementation depends on maintenance, funding, and community input, with preservation standards guiding how heritage and modernization are balanced.
