Kognitívviselkedéstan, commonly known as CBT, is a widely used form of psychotherapy. It focuses on the interconnectedness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The core principle of CBT is that our interpretations of events, rather than the events themselves, significantly influence our emotional responses and subsequent actions.

The primary goal of CBT is to help individuals identify and challenge maladaptive thought patterns and beliefs that contribute to psychological distress. By becoming aware of these negative or distorted thoughts, often referred to as cognitive distortions, people can begin to reframe them into more realistic and helpful perspectives. This cognitive restructuring is a central component of the therapy.

Alongside cognitive work, CBT also emphasizes behavioral interventions. This involves helping clients develop and practice new, more adaptive behaviors that can replace unhelpful ones. Techniques may include exposure therapy for anxiety disorders, behavioral activation for depression, and assertiveness training. Through these practical exercises, individuals learn to cope with difficult situations and improve their overall functioning.

CBT is an active and collaborative therapy. The therapist and client work together to set goals and develop strategies. It is typically short-term and goal-oriented, with sessions often including homework assignments to reinforce learning and practice new skills outside of therapy. CBT has demonstrated effectiveness in treating a broad range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders.
