Knytting

Knytting is a Norwegian term that broadly denotes the act of tying or knotting cordage, threads, or other flexible materials to form functional or decorative structures. As a practical skill, knytting encompasses a range of techniques used in maritime work, climbing, fishing, textile crafts and everyday tasks where secure joins, loops or bindings are required.

Historically, knotting and cordage work have been important in seafaring cultures, including the Nordic countries, where reliable knots and splices were essential for rigging, nets and shelters. Traditional craft forms such as macramé and netting make use of repetitive knot patterns to create decorative items, household goods and wearable objects.

Common techniques associated with knytting include simple utility knots (overhand, reef/square knot), hitches and bends (bowline, sheet bend), as well as decorative and structural methods (braiding, plaiting, macramé knots). Materials range from natural fibers—hemp, cotton, wool—to modern synthetics such as nylon and polyester; the choice affects strength, stretch and durability.

Knytting requires attention to correct knot selection, appropriate cordage diameter and condition, and proper tightening and securing. In safety-critical contexts like climbing or rescue, formal training and inspection are essential. As both craft and practical skill, knytting remains a versatile tradition adapted to contemporary uses in design, outdoor activities and artisanal practice.
