Cordage is a general term for rope-like products made by twisting or braiding natural or synthetic fibers into a continuous length for tying, binding, supporting, lifting, or securing loads. It encompasses rope, line, and cord used in maritime, industrial, climbing, and everyday applications. The word reflects its historical role in sail and rigging, but cordage is now produced for a wide range of purposes.

Cordage is constructed in several architectural forms. Laid cordage is formed by twisting multiple strands together, while braided cordage uses an interlaced pattern to create a smooth, round or flat profile. Plaited cordage relies on interwoven fibers as well. Modern ropes may be kernmantle, with a strong core (kernel) surrounded by an outer sheath for abrasion resistance, or be solid braided constructions. Core materials include natural fibers such as hemp, manila, sisal, cotton, and jute, and synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester, polypropylene, aramids, and high-modulus polyethylene. The choice of construction and material influences strength, stretch, abrasion resistance, UV tolerance, and chemical compatibility.

Historically, natural fiber cordage dominated shipping and lifting operations, with synthetic fibers introduced in the 20th century bringing greater strength-to-weight ratios and durability. Today cordage is used for rigging, towing, mooring, climbing, rescue, fishing, agriculture, and packaging, among other applications. Selection depends on load requirements, environment, flexibility, and durability, with testing standards (such as breaking strength and elongation) guiding safety and performance.

Care and safety: natural fiber cordage may rot or mildew if stored damp; synthetic cordage resists moisture but can degrade under UV light or chemicals. Regular inspection for fraying, core looseness, or glazing is advised, and proper storage away from heat extends life. End-of-life options include recycling or disposal per material type.
