Klaviatuuridest are input devices that allow users to enter text and commands into a computer or other electronic device. They typically consist of a set of keys, each representing a character, number, or function. The layout of these keys is standardized, with the most common arrangement being the QWERTY layout, named after the first six letters on the top row.

There are various types of keyboards designed for different purposes. Standard keyboards are used for general computing tasks, while ergonomic keyboards are designed to reduce strain and improve comfort for users who spend long hours typing. Gaming keyboards often feature faster response times, customizable backlighting, and programmable macro keys for enhanced gameplay.

Other variations include wireless keyboards, which connect to devices via Bluetooth or radio frequency, offering greater flexibility and reducing cable clutter. Virtual keyboards are software-based and appear on touchscreens, common on smartphones and tablets. Numeric keypads, often integrated into larger keyboards or available as separate devices, are optimized for rapid data entry of numbers.

The technology behind keyboards has evolved significantly. Early keyboards were mechanical, but many modern keyboards use membrane technology, which is generally quieter and less expensive. Mechanical keyboards are still favored by some for their tactile feedback and durability. The interface through which keyboards connect to computers has also changed, moving from older PS/2 ports to the ubiquitous USB connection.
