Kivettyneessä, also known as petrified wood, refers to fossilized wood that has undergone a mineralization process. This occurs when a tree or tree-like plant has been buried under sediment, preventing decay due to a lack of oxygen. Over time, the organic matter of the wood is replaced by minerals, most commonly silica. This process preserves the original structure of the wood, including the cellular patterns, in stone.

The petrification process is slow and requires specific geological conditions. Groundwater rich in dissolved minerals, such as silica, iron, or calcite, seeps into the wood. As the water flows through the porous wood structure, the minerals precipitate out of the solution, gradually filling the spaces within the wood's cells and cell walls. This process can take millions of years.

Petrified wood can exhibit a wide range of colors depending on the minerals present. For instance, iron oxides can create reds, yellows, and browns, while manganese can produce blues and purples. The original wood grain and texture are often remarkably preserved, making each piece a unique geological specimen.

The study of petrified wood provides valuable insights into ancient plant life and past environments. It helps scientists understand the types of trees that existed millions of years ago, the climate conditions they lived in, and the geological processes that shaped the Earth's surface. Petrified wood is also collected and appreciated for its aesthetic qualities and is sometimes used in decorative or artistic applications. Notable deposits of petrified wood are found worldwide, with famous locations including the Petrified Forest National Park in the United States and the Geopark Lesvos in Greece.
