Fossilized is an adjective used in paleontology to describe remains or traces of organisms that have undergone fossilization. Fossilization encompasses the processes by which organic material is preserved over geological time, often becoming a rock-like object. Fossilized remains can retain morphological details that allow scientists to infer anatomy, behavior, and environmental conditions of past life, even when soft tissues are not preserved.

Several pathways produce fossilization. Permineralization occurs when mineral-rich water fills the pores and replaces the original tissue with minerals, preserving three-dimensional structure. Replacement can dissolve the original material and substitute it molecule-for-molecule with minerals such as silica or calcite. Carbonization creates a thin carbon film that outlines delicate organisms, especially plants. Molds and casts form when an organism leaves an impression (mold) and a mineral-filled replica (cast) forms in the surrounding sediment. Entrapment in amber or preserving resins can likewise fossilize organisms while maintaining fine details.

Successful fossilization depends on rapid burial, the presence of hard parts, and favorable chemical conditions. Oxygen-poor environments slow decay, and mineral-bearing waters promote mineral replacement. Soft tissues are rarely preserved, so the fossil record is biased toward organisms with hard external structures, hard parts such as shells or bones, and those living in sedimentary settings that protect remains from destruction.

Fossilized material is studied to reconstruct evolutionary histories, past climates, and ancient ecosystems. The term also appears in common language to describe something extremely old or fixed, but in scientific usage it refers specifically to preservation processes described above.
