These changes are typically triggered by exceeding a critical threshold in an applied parameter, such as stress, electric field, temperature, or pressure.

In materials science, katkeilmiöt can manifest as fracture in solids, yielding under stress, or phase transitions. For instance, when a material is subjected to increasing mechanical load, it may deform elastically up to a certain point.
