The term is borrowed from systems theory and applied meteorology, and it has been adopted in environmental science, risk analysis, and socio-economic studies to describe situations where initial setbacks trigger further failures in a compounding manner.

The core mechanism is a positive feedback loop: an adverse event causes a change in the system that increases the likelihood of similar or more severe events. In climate science, for example, melting ice reduces albedo, which accelerates further warming and melting—a classic case of catastrophic feedback. In public health, unchecked spread of an infectious disease can overwhelm healthcare infrastructure, causing additional outbreaks. In economics, rapid devaluation of a currency can trigger bank runs, leading to widespread liquidity crises.
