Perturbations are disturbances or deviations of a system from a reference or base state. They are often considered small relative to the unperturbed solution, allowing researchers to study how the system responds without solving the full, exact problem. Perturbations can be deterministic, arising from known external influences, or stochastic, incorporating random fluctuations.

In mathematics and physics, perturbation theory expresses a quantity as a series in a small parameter, usually written as A = A0 + εA1 + ε2A2 + ..., where ε is a dimensionless measure of the disturbance. When ε is small, truncating the series after a few terms yields an approximate solution and clarifies how the base state is modified by the perturbation. Linearization around the base state is a common first step in this analysis.

Perturbations appear in many disciplines. In celestial mechanics, gravitational perturbations from other bodies alter orbital elements, leading to features such as precession and resonances. In quantum mechanics, time-independent perturbation theory shifts energy levels and state vectors due to a weak additional potential, while time-dependent perturbation theory describes transition probabilities between states. In cosmology, primordial perturbations in the early universe evolve into large-scale structure. In dynamical systems and fluid dynamics, small perturbations of equilibria or base flows are studied to assess stability through linear stability analysis and eigenvalue spectra.

Limitations of perturbative methods arise when disturbances are not small or when nonlinear effects dominate; in such cases non-perturbative or numerical approaches may be required.
