Kariesforebyggelse, also known as caries prevention, refers to the practices and measures taken to protect teeth from tooth decay, commonly known as cavities. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acids when they metabolize sugars and starches from food. These acids erode the tooth enamel, leading to the formation of cavities.

Effective caries prevention focuses on several key areas. Maintaining good oral hygiene is paramount. This includes regular brushing of teeth, ideally twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks. Flossing daily is also crucial to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth, areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.

Diet plays a significant role in preventing caries. Limiting the intake of sugary and starchy foods and drinks, especially between meals, reduces the fuel for decay-causing bacteria. Frequent snacking on these items increases the frequency of acid attacks on the teeth.

Regular dental check-ups are an essential part of a comprehensive prevention strategy. Dentists can identify early signs of decay, recommend preventive treatments like fluoride applications or dental sealants, and provide personalized advice on oral hygiene and diet. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, protecting them from decay by sealing the grooves and pits.

In some cases, additional preventive measures may be recommended, such as the use of fluoride mouth rinses or prescription fluoride toothpaste for individuals at higher risk of developing cavities. Understanding and implementing these preventive strategies can significantly reduce the incidence of tooth decay and promote long-term oral health.
