Jännitteensäätelyssä refers to the control of electrical voltage levels in electronic circuits and power supply systems. In engineering, the term is commonly used to describe techniques that maintain a stable output voltage despite variations in input voltage, load current, or temperature. Proper voltage regulation is essential for the reliable operation of digital and analog devices, as well as for power management in mobile and industrial applications.

There are two primary categories of voltage regulation devices: linear regulators and switching regulators. Linear regulators, such as series‑regulator ICs, drop excess voltage by dissipating it as heat. They offer simple design, low noise, and narrowband output ripple but have lower efficiency, especially when the input–output voltage difference is large. Switching regulators, including buck, boost, and buck‑boost topologies, use a high‑frequency switching element and energy storage components to transfer power with high efficiency. They are more complex and can introduce switching noise, but they are favored when power loss must be minimized.

Zener diodes, voltage references, and reference ICs provide a stable voltage reference for feedback control. In many precision applications, reference ICs such as the 1.25 V bandgap reference are used in combination with an error amplifier to create a variable regulator that can be set to the desired output voltage. Control loops are typically closed with negative feedback: the output voltage is sensed and compared with the reference; the error signal drives the regulator element to correct any deviation.

Voltage‑regulation techniques are applied in almost all modern electronic systems, from power adapters and battery charge controllers to complex aerospace and data‑center power supplies. The choice of regulator depends on factors such as load current range, efficiency requirements, noise tolerance, and cost constraints.
