Voltage regulation is the process of maintaining a constant output voltage within acceptable limits despite changes in input voltage, load current, or other disturbances. It is a fundamental concern in both electrical power distribution and electronic power supplies, where stable voltage is essential for equipment performance and safety.

In electrical power systems, voltage regulation describes the ability of the transmission and distribution network to keep voltages within regulated bounds as generation, load, and network topology change. Utilities employ devices such as on‑load tap‑changing transformers, automatic voltage regulators, series reactors, capacitor banks, and voltage-controlled reactors to compensate voltage swings. Regulation is often expressed as a percentage change in voltage from no-load to full-load or from nominal to actual voltage, and utilities specify acceptable voltage bands (for example, ±5% or ±10% depending on region).

In electronic devices and power supplies, voltage regulation refers to circuits that set and maintain a stable DC output. Linear regulators (such as LDOs) provide low-noise, simple regulation with a fixed or adjustable output, while switching regulators (buck, boost, buck-boost) use high-efficiency conversion and feedback to maintain the target voltage over varying input voltages and loads.

The regulation process relies on sensing the output voltage, comparing it to a reference, and feeding back an error signal to a control element that adjusts the source or impedance faced by the load. Key performance metrics include regulation accuracy, dropout voltage, load regulation, line regulation, response time, and efficiency. Temperature, component tolerances, and aging can affect regulation.

Applications span power grids, data centers, consumer electronics, and automotive systems. Good voltage regulation improves device protection, performance, and reliability, while poor regulation can cause instability, malfunctions, or damage.
