Izoprofilok, also known as isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol, is a clear, colorless chemical compound with the molecular formula C₃H₈O. It is a versatile solvent and antiseptic widely used in various industries, including healthcare, cosmetics, and manufacturing. Belonging to the alcohol family, it shares similarities with ethanol but differs in structure, making it less toxic and more volatile.

As a disinfectant, isopropyl alcohol is commonly used to clean surfaces and skin due to its ability to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is particularly effective against enveloped viruses, such as those responsible for influenza and COVID-19, though its efficacy varies with concentration—typically 60% to 90% is optimal for disinfection. In medical settings, it is often applied to skin before injections or surgeries to reduce infection risks.

In industrial applications, isopropyl alcohol serves as a solvent for resins, inks, and adhesives, as well as a cleaning agent for electronic components. It is also a key ingredient in some personal care products, including hand sanitizers, aftershave lotions, and deodorants. Due to its low cost and effectiveness, it is a preferred alternative to ethanol in many formulations.

While generally safe for external use, isopropyl alcohol can be irritating to skin and mucous membranes, particularly at higher concentrations. Ingestion or inhalation of large amounts may lead to toxicity, causing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or respiratory distress. The compound is produced industrially through the hydration of propylene, a process involving sulfuric acid or catalytic methods. It is highly flammable and should be stored away from heat sources and open flames. Despite its widespread use, its environmental impact is a consideration, as improper disposal can contaminate water sources.
