Inerrant

Inerrant is a term used to describe something that is free from error. In theology, it is most commonly applied to religious texts, particularly the Bible, by those who believe that scripture, in its original manuscripts, contains no errors of fact or doctrine. This belief, known as biblical inerrancy, is a cornerstone of many Protestant denominations. Proponents of inerrancy often argue that the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God and therefore must be completely truthful and accurate in all that it affirms.

The concept of inerrancy is distinct from infallibility, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Infallibility generally suggests that a text is incapable of leading someone astray in matters of faith and practice, but may not necessarily be factually accurate in every detail. Inerrancy, on the other hand, makes a stronger claim about the absolute truthfulness of the text. Interpretations of how to understand inerrancy vary; some hold to a strict, literal interpretation of all biblical passages, while others allow for figurative language, genre, and historical context to be considered.

The doctrine of inerrancy has been a subject of considerable debate within Christian theology throughout history and continues to be a point of discussion among scholars and believers. Critics of inerrancy often point to perceived discrepancies or historical inaccuracies within the biblical text as evidence against its absolute truthfulness. They may advocate for alternative understandings of biblical authority, focusing on its message of salvation or its moral and spiritual guidance rather than its factual accuracy.
