Common categories of IT equipment include computing devices (desktops, laptops, workstations, servers), networking gear (routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points), storage solutions (SAN, NAS, HDDs/SSDs, tapes), peripherals (monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice), and data center infrastructure (racks, uninterruptible power supplies, cooling units). Each category serves different roles in executing IT services, from end-user computing to centralized data processing and long-term data retention.

Lifecycle management covers procurement, deployment, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life disposal. Asset tracking, configuration management, warranty and service contracts, and software licensing are integral components. Organizations typically use asset management systems to monitor performance, plan upgrades, ensure compatibility, and comply with security and environmental standards. Proper disposal and data sanitization are essential to protect sensitive information.

Standards and interoperability play a key role in IT equipment design and operation. Equipment usually adheres to industry standards for connectivity and safety (for example, IEEE, USB, PCIe, HDMI) and to security and governance frameworks (such as ISO/IEC 27001). Environmental and regulatory considerations often include RoHS, WEEE, and energy efficiency programs like ENERGY STAR or EPEAT.

Effective selection and management of IT equipment aim to balance performance, reliability, energy use, and total cost of ownership, while ensuring privacy, security, and environmental responsibility.
