Holzbalken

Holzbalken, also referred to as timber beams or wooden joists, are structural elements made from lumber that provide support in construction and framing. They are traditionally used in residential and commercial buildings for roofs, floors, and walls, and have also found application in modern architecture and furniture design. Holzbalken can be produced from various species of wood, such as spruce, pine, fir, or softwood, and may be treated with preservatives to increase durability and resistance to pests, rot, and moisture.

The basic function of a Holzbalken is to distribute loads, including those from the building’s own weight and from additional loads such as snow and occupants. The shape, size, and spacing of the beams are determined by engineering calculations that account for strength, stiffness, and local building codes. Common beam sizes in European standards range from 140 mm to 200 mm in width, with depths that can exceed 300 mm. In many countries, the load‑bearing capacity of timber is expressed in kilonewtons per meter, and the use of glulam (glue-laminated timber) allows for longer spans and higher strength than solid lumber.

Assembly methods for Holzbalken include simple handties, metal brackets, and modern connections such as screw ties or engineered fasteners. Modern construction trends also harness cross‑laminated timber (CLT) panels, which incorporate many Holzbalken in a layered structure to enhance overall stability and fire resistance. Compliance with environmental standards is increasingly important; sustainably harvested wood, certified by organizations such as FSC or PEFC, is preferred in many projects.
