Hijsafstand

The term hijsafstand is used in Dutch engineering to denote the distance that a load is moved vertically by a hoisting device. It is most commonly applied in contexts such as crane operation, cable pulling, and material handling where the vertical travel of a load must be specified, calculated, or limited. In this sense the hijsafstand is the difference between the lowest and highest positions of the load during a hoisting cycle and is measured along the line of the hoist cable.

In practical use the hijsafstand is an important parameter in the design of hoists and cranes. It determines the minimum length of rope, chain or wire required to reach the loading point from the highest position of the hoist. Engineers calculate the necessary cable length by adding the maximum hoist height, any required clearance above the load, and a safety margin for slack or ripening. For example, if a crane can raise a load 10 metres and a further 2 metres of clearance is required above the load, the minimum cable length might be 12 metres once a safety slack is added.

The length of the hijsafstand also influences the forces in the hoist system. The tension in a rope or chain is proportional to the load weight and inversely proportional to the sine of the angle between the cable and the vertical. When the rope is almost vertical, the tension is close to the weight of the load, but any horizontal component increases the required cable strength. Accurate knowledge of hijsafstand therefore supports safe load calculations and compliance with occupational safety standards.

Hijsafstand is also applied to the safety calculations of overhead cranes, where the maximum permissible lift height is often derived from the longest cable that can be used while maintaining adequate safety factors. Consequently, it is a key datum in specifications, design documents, and operational manuals for all lifting equipment used in industry.
