Following the hair-pulling, individuals often experience a sense of relief or gratification, which can reinforce the behavior.

This condition falls under the category of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. It is not a sign of a mental deficiency and individuals are typically aware that their hair-pulling is excessive or serves no purpose. The hair-pulling can occur from various parts of the body, most commonly the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, but can also affect other areas like arms, legs, or pubic hair.

The exact cause of hajhászásra is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a complex interplay of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Stress, anxiety, and certain underlying psychological conditions can trigger or exacerbate the urge.
