Gynækologer

Gynækologer are medical doctors who specialize in women's reproductive health. The term originates from the Greek words “gynē” meaning woman and “legein” meaning to heal. In most countries a gynækolog first completes a medical degree, then undertakes a specialist residency that may last between five and six years, depending on the national licensing requirements.

During residency gynækologer receive comprehensive training in obstetrics, gynecology, and often in related fields such as reproductive endocrinology, urogynecology, and minimally invasive surgery. They learn to assess patients from adolescence through menopause, manage contraception, treat menstrual disorders, diagnose and treat gynecologic cancers, and provide maternal care during pregnancy and childbirth. In many jurisdictions, they also perform procedures such as colonoscopy, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and sonography.

Professional bodies such as the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and equivalent organizations worldwide set standards for practice, continuing education, and ethical conduct. Gynækologer often collaborate with other specialists including endocrinologists, oncologists, and mental health professionals to offer comprehensive care.

The role of the gynækolog has evolved from primarily delivery and pregnancy care to a broader focus on preventive medicine, screening for cancers such as cervical and breast cancer, and addressing sexual health. Early detection programs, such as Pap smear screening and HPV vaccination, are integral parts of public health strategies in many countries. By combining medical knowledge with patient-centered counseling, gynækologer play a critical role in advancing women's health across the lifespan.
