An endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the endocrine system, which includes glands such as the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, and the ovaries and testes. Endocrinology focuses on hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders, growth problems, and reproduction. Physicians complete medical school, a residency in internal medicine or pediatrics, and a fellowship in endocrinology; in many countries, board certification is available through national organizations, with separate tracks for adult and pediatric endocrinology.

Endocrinologists treat a wide range of conditions, including diabetes mellitus type 1 and type 2, thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules, and cancer), metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis, obesity and metabolic syndrome, and disorders of the adrenal, pituitary, and reproductive glands. They manage puberty and growth disorders, menstrual irregularities, infertility related to hormonal causes, and hormone deficiencies in both men and women. They also diagnose complex endocrine problems, coordinate imaging and laboratory testing, and supervise long-term treatment plans.

Diagnostic tools commonly used by endocrinologists include hormone blood tests, glucose tolerance tests, and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI. Treatments may involve hormone replacement therapy, insulin therapy for diabetes, oral medications, targeted therapies for thyroid and adrenal conditions, referrals for surgery when needed, and lifestyle and dietary guidance. Ongoing monitoring and periodic reassessment are central to effective endocrine care.

Endocrinologists often collaborate with primary care physicians, surgeons, dietitians, and other specialists to manage chronic endocrine disorders. They work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and academic or research settings. Professional organizations, such as national endocrinology societies, develop guidelines, certify practitioners, and support continuing education.
