Gujarats refers to the people native to or associated with the Indian state of Gujarat. The term is derived from the Sanskrit words “gujara” (land of the well‑spaced) and the suffix “-ts,” used colloquially to denote a collective group. In common usage, Gujarats encompasses Hindus and Muslims residing in Gujarat, as well as members of diverse subcultures such as the Patidars, Upadhyas, Kolis, Dhangars, and various Jain and Hindu Brahmin communities. The Gujarati language, an Indo‑Aryan tongue, serves as the unifying linguistic identity of Gujarats and is widely spoken throughout the state as well as in diaspora communities in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and East Africa.
