Postindependence refers to the period after a polity achieves independence from colonial rule or from a larger state, during which it builds a sovereign political system and defines its national identity. The transition typically involves drafting a constitution, establishing or reforming institutions such as the legislature, judiciary, civil service, and security forces, and creating foreign policy and international recognition. Economic restructuring often accompanies political change, with policies on land reform, industrialization, resource management, trade, and the expansion of social programs in health and education aimed at broad-based development.

Social and political dynamics in the postindependence period are shaped by legacy issues such as colonial borders, ethnic or regional cleavages, and new governance challenges.
