Guixs

Guixs is not a standard term in computing and is most often a misspelling or informal reference to GNU Guix, a functional package manager and distribution framework developed as part of the GNU Project. The term may be used by some to refer to the project’s tooling in plural or as an alias, but the established name is GNU Guix.

GNU Guix provides a declarative, functional approach to software package management and system configuration. Packages and their dependencies are described in code, enabling reproducible builds and easy sharing of exact environments. The system aims to minimize side effects by treating package builds as pure functions and by using a build isolation model.

The core of GNU Guix is a Scheme-based language used to define packages, package recipes, and system configurations via the Guile implementation. This design supports reproducibility, composability, and a high degree of transparency. The package store is content-addressed, and builds are recorded as generations, enabling reliable upgrades, rollbacks, and garbage collection of unused items. Users can install packages either globally or per user, and can reproduce historical configurations with dedicated tooling.

In addition to package management, GNU Guix includes Guix System, also known as Guix System Distribution (GuixSD) in earlier milestones. This provides a complete operating system built around the same declarative, functional principles, deployable to hardware or virtual environments. System configurations are written in Scheme and deployed in a transactional fashion, allowing deterministic setups and straightforward rollback to previous states.

Development and licensing follow the GNU model: GNU Guix is maintained as free software under copyleft licenses, aligning with the project’s goals of user freedom, transparency, and reproducibility in software packaging and system configuration.
