Gerbilliscus

Gerbilliscus is a genus of rodent in the family Muridae, subfamily Gerbillinae. It includes several African gerbil species that occupy dry, open habitats across the continent and are adapted to burrowing and arid environments.

Description and ecology: Members of this genus are small to medium-sized rodents with fur that ranges from sandy to gray-brown. They typically have an elongated body, large eyes and ears, and a long tail that assists with balance. Gerbilliscus species are generally nocturnal or crepuscular and spend much of the day in burrows. Their diet is mainly plant-based, consisting of seeds, grasses, and other vegetation, but they will opportunistically consume insects. They are often social, forming colonies or family groups that share burrow systems. Reproduction varies among species and conditions, with the potential for multiple litters per year under favorable circumstances.
